NABILA DADABHOY
Musallah
This series entitled Musallah references prayer rugs from my childhood. Traditionally, these rugs are laid down as a means of transforming an ordinary space into a place of worship.
The arches, floral motifs, and depictions of the Ka’aba are cut, fused, and translated from the prayer rugs to impastoed acrylic on raw canvas or panel. The patterns and colors distorted and altered. Through painting, the controlled delicate lines of tapestry become swollen and unstable.
